How to Convert PP / HDPE Microns to GSM
About
Microns and Grams per Square Meter (gsm)
The micron is a
standard measurement of length in the metric system that’s the equivalent of
one-millionth of a meter.
Gsm stands for
“grams per square meter.” When used in the context of measuring the weight of PP
sheet or any material it is also referred to as “grammage.” It is the
equivalent of 0.001 kilograms per square meter.
The challenge is
that there’s no real direct one-to-one correlation between microns and gsm.
That’s because microns measure the thickness of PP sheet or any material, while
grams per square meter measures the weight of PP sheet or any material.
For an example, two
people can each weigh 150 KG, but not be the same at all. If one person is
5’11” tall, and the other is 5’2”, there will be a significant difference
between the two physical bodies in space.
However, you can
convert microns to gsm with a few tools and a simple calculation.
What
You’ll Need
In order to
calculate both microns and grams per square meter, you’ll need the following
tools:
·
Thickness Gauge
·
Gram scale
Convert
Microns to Gsm
To convert microns
to grammage or grams per square meter, measure the mass and the volume of a
large stack of the PP sheet or any material with which you’re working. These
measurements should be calculated in grams and centimeters cubed, respectively.
To find the volume,
multiply the width and height from the label of the PP sheet or any material
packaging by the thickness of the stack of PP sheet or any material. Measure
the thickness yourself with the measuring tape or micrometer.
Lets take an example, suppose we have a 100 microns PP sheet, so to calculate the GSM we should know the density and volume.
here we have to calculate GSM, it means
L = 1 meter
B = 1 meter
H = 40 micron
then, volume = L X B X H
= 1 X 1 X 40 X 10-6
(Since, 1 meter = 106 microns)
= 40 X 10-6 meter cube.
Now, MASS = Density X Volume
Density of PP is 910 kg per meter cube
So, MASS = 910 X 40 X 10-6 KG
= 0.0364 kG
Since, here in this case mass in gram will be equal to GSM, as we have already taken L & B 1 meter.
so, GSM = MASS in kg X 1000 (1 kg = 1000 gram)
therfore, in our example GSM = 0.0364 X 1000
= 36.4 gram per square meter.
