How to Convert Denier of PP Woven Fabric to GSM

 Normally, we measure the thickness of PP woven fabric in GSM. In addition, it also refers to "Denier", which is also a measurement indicator, so how do we convert the two?

First of all, let's see what's GSM and Denier mean.

1. What is GSM of pp woven material?

GSM means grams per square meter.

2. What is Denier?

Denier means fiber grams per 9000m, it is a unit of measurement that is used to determine the fiber thickness of individual threads or filaments used in the creation of textiles and fabrics. Fabrics with a high denier count tend to be thick, sturdy, and durable. Fabrics with a low denier count tend to be sheer, soft, and silky.

Then, let's do the calculation upon an actual case,

We take a roll of polypropylene tape (yarn) from the extruding production line, width 2.54mm, length 100m, and weight 8grams.

Denier means yarn grams per 9000m,

So, Denier=8/100*9000=720D

Note:- Tape(Yarn) width is not included in calculating Denier. As again it means yarn grams per 9000m, whatever is the width of yarn.

When weaving this yarn into 1m*1m square fabric, let's calculate what’s the weight will be per square meter (gsm).

Method 1.

GSM=D/9000m*1000mm/2.54mm*2

1.D/9000m=grams per meter long

2.1000mm/2.54mm=number of yarn per meter (include warp and weft then *2)

3. Each yarn from 1m*1m is 1m long, so the number of the yarn is also the total length of the yarn.

4. Then the formula makes the 1m*1m square fabric equal as a long yarn.

It comes to a simplified formula,

GSM=DENIER/YARN WIDTH/4.5

DENIER=GSM*YARN WIDTH*4.5

Remark: It only works for PP woven bags weaving industry, and the GSM will arise if weaved as anti-slip type bags.

Method 2.

In other words if we want to understand the actual calculation let's use the actual words or terms we use while making Woven sacks like Mesh, Denier, GSM, Warp and Weft.

Click to know in detail

Let's take a example and derive our formula.

Example, We have to manufacture a 10x8 mesh fabric with 800 Denier Tape, What would be the GSM. (Assuming same for both warp and weft)

Here Mesh of Warp is 10, It means there is 10 tape per inch. Since we are calculating GSM we have to take no of tape in 1 meter. Now there is 39.37" in 1 Mtr.

So, In Warp There would be 10 x 39.37 = 393.7 tape in 1 mtr of 1 mtr each so we have 393.7 meter tape.

Smillarly, In Weft There would be 8 x 39.37 = 314.96 tape in 1 mtr of 1 mtr each so we have 314.96 meter tape.

We have total tape in mtr is 393.7 + 314.96 = 708.66 mtr

As the defination of denier, it is weight in gram of 9000 mtr Tape.

Using Unitry Method,

Since, 9000 mtr tape weight is 800 gram.

So, for 1 mtr tape weight would be 800/9000 gram

So, for 708.66 mtr tape weight would be 800/9000*708.66 = 62.99 =~63 Gram that is GSM.

Concluding what we did

GSM = {Denier x 39.37 x (Warp mesh + Weft mesh)} / 9000
